The main goal of Title III is to ensure that all children with disabilities have the opportunity to participate in the child care centers services and programs.
Centers can not deny a child because of their disability unless the child is
"a
direct threat to the health or safety of others or require a
fundamental
alteration of the program"
Centers
have to make reasonable
modifications
to their policies and
practices to integrate children, parents, and
guardians with disabilities into
their programs.
Centers
must generally make their facilities accessible to persons with
disabilities. Existing facilities are subject to the readily
achievable
standard
for barrier removal, while newly constructed facilities and
any altered
portions of existing facilities must be fully
accessible.
Centers
must provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services needed for
effective
communication
with children or adults with disabilities, when
doing so would not
constitute an undue
burden.
Samantha,
ReplyDeleteI think you chose an interesting topic to blog about. I wasn't aware that day care centers had laws to follow regarding children with disabilities and the parents of children with disabilities at day care centers. I noticed that you've worked at a child care center for three years. Have you noticed any of these required accomodations in place?
Lindsey
Lindsey,
DeleteThere have been many situations in my three years of experience. The director of the center generally deals with all of the rules, but I have seen some instances with children with disabilities. I was initially interested in this topic because of what I have witnessed as an employee. As a teacher in the classroom I do not see all of the behind the scenes decisions, but I do see what comes of the decisions that are made. Because of this, I wanted to know all of the rules to see if the decisions made are justified. Later in the blog I will post certain instances where the accommodations in ADA were not followed. Heres a preview! http://articles.cnn.com/1996-08-22/us/9608_22_justice.diabetics_1_blood-sugar-diabetic-children-childcare?_s=PM:US
